My research currently focuses upon geographies of alternative economies. I am particularly concerned with the ways that people situated in marginal areas/status act collectively in response to capitalist hegemony of neo-liberalist economy and how these changes generate various outcomes that have implications for place-making and economic subjectivation.

 

My previous research was to look at knowledge transfer systems of organic farming among small holders in an indigenous community, Kalala (加納納部落). Part of the research results has been published as an essay, An Alternative Agricultural Space in an Indigenous Community: Kalala, Taiwan, in Rural areas between regional needs and global challenges: Transformations in rural space (eds. Walter Leimgruber & Chang-yi Chang) by Springer.

Inspired by a post-structuralist epistemology elaborated by J.K. Gibon-Graham, I am currently engaged with practice of post-capitalist commoning. One programme is initiation of credit union movement on campus. It aims at enhancing financial literature and encouraging young people to help each other through a campus-based credit union (東華校園儲蓄互助社). An essay, Dependent subjects and financial inclusion: Launching a credit union on a campus in Taiwan (co-authored by Hao-che Pei), in Growing up and getting by’? Poverty, precarity and the changing nature of childhood and youth (eds. John Horton, Helena Pimlott-Wilson and Sarah Hall) by Policy Press is published in April 2021. ​

Another programme is to do with community practices of solidarity economy in eastern Taiwan, supported by the Centre for Social Participation (東華大學社會參與中心) and collaborating with various local partners.
